Energy and passion are the elements that distinguish this close-knit formation, corroborated on this occasion by Tullio Ricci's brilliant Sax. MF3 has released an album entitled "Message", excellently reviewed by critics and present in the publication "100 Dischi di Jazz Italiano" by A. Furfaro, containing original songs and reinterpretations composed of an explosive mix of jazz, rock and funk mitigated by a light lyricism in the more intimate compositions.
In addition to the songs from the album, the repertoire also includes carefully electrified jazz standards and homages to some of the musicians who most influenced the style of this band: Chick Corea, John Scofield, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Williams.
The first studio work of this brilliant formation aims to recover the energy and sounds of 70s rock, grafting them directly into the heart of jazz through the use of structures and harmonies congenial to it. In this explosive mixture, echoes of funk, psychedelic free and moments of delicate lyricism emerge, ideal terrain for the intense improvisations of the protagonists of this work.
Max Ferri was born as a guitarist, burning his adolescent energies in the rock field, but was soon captured by the magic of improvisation and jazz language, an interest that led him to graduate first from the Civica di Jazz (Milan), following the precious advice of Franco Cerri, subsequently obtaining the II Level Academic Diploma at the Verdi Conservatory (Milan).
Curiosity and passion for music and the guitar at 360° will lead him to collaborate with both jazz artists - Alberto Mandarini; Attilio Zanchi; Alberto Tacchini; Tullio Ricci - who with pop music artists - Enrico Ruggeri; Eugenio Finardi; Vittorio De Scalzi; Ron; Francesco Baccini.
Another cornerstone of Ferriana's activity is guitar teaching, which he carries out at the Nam school in Milan and holding frequent internships/seminars in various music schools. He also collaborates with the well-known amplifier brand Hughes & Kettern.
Giorgio Di Tullio internationally renowned drummer has collaborated among many with: Eric Marienthal, Rick Martgitza, Mel Collins, Jeff Gardner, Bob Mover, Alex Acuna, Mena Gendrickson, Larry Nocella, Michael Rosen, Dominique Landolf, Javier Girotto, Fabrizio Bosso, Dario Deidda, Yuri Goloubev, Per Mathisen, Paolino Dalla Porta, Nicolò Fragile, Alex Acuna, Tim Hinkley.
He has participated in numerous Jazz Festivals including: Montreaux jazz festival, Estival jazz Lugano, Willisau jazz festival, Arezzo jazz festival, Munster jazz festival, Percfest festival in Laigueglia etc. Author of two teaching methods for BMG Ricordi: Nuovi Orizzoniti Musicali and New Contemporary independence. William Nicastro multifaceted bassist, always interested in funk and jazz/rock music in all its contaminations, plays in various important formations on the national territory such as TheTaanTrio (jazz/core), Giovanni Falzone & Mosche Elettriche (jazz/rock), Giorgio Di Tullio and the Four Cells (fusion/jazz), Sonata Islands Kommandoh (zeuhl jazz/progressive), Pop Sibilities (pop-fusion), Shandon (skacore-rocksteady), the Magnetics (early reggae-ska).
Tullio Ricci has been active as a tenor and alto saxophonist for several years now in the Italian jazz scene and in particular in Milan. After several years of collaborations and recordings with the most representative musicians of Italian jazz, he moved to New York in 2001 where he recorded his first work with a quartet of American all stars (Ralph Peterson, John Ore, Jeb Patton). Upon his return to Italy he attended the degree course in Jazz at the Milan Conservatory and at the same time started a profitable recording business. He is still engaged in a polyrhythmic research project based on jazz-rock foundations which is deeply inspired by Steve Coleman's M-Base movement. He has played, over the years, on tour with New York trumpeter Ralph Alessi in 2011, with the famous vibraphonist Mike Mainieri from 2014 to 2017, with Erik Linder (Dirty Loops) and Johnatan Kreisberg in 2019. He has recorded several solo albums and as a wingman, among which we remember 3 albums of Luca Missiti's Monday Orchestra with guests, among many, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Mike Mainieri.
Alberto Mandarini Born in Trino Vercellese in 1966, he began his musical activity at a very young age, collaborating with the RAI Symphony Orchestra of Turin, the International Orchestra of Italy, "I Filarmonici di Torino" and with various chamber music ensembles for soloists brass. With the latter he participated in events such as "Settembre Musica"; "Asti theater 14/15"; "Piemonte in Musica", and obtained recognition at the Stresa, Moncalieri, Asti and Busalla competitions. He is currently part of the "Sestetto di Enrico Fazio", of the "Italian Instabile Orchestra", of the "Enten Eller" quartet, of the "Jazz.it Orchestra" of Giuseppe Emmanuele, of the "Crescendo Big Band" of Sandro Cerino and of the "Proxima Centauri Orchestra" by Giorgio Gaslini. He has also collaborated with the "Grande Nazionale di Jazz Orchestra" and with numerous other groups, playing with important Italian and foreign musicians including Elton Dean, Tim Berne, Tony Scott, Maria Schneider, Charlie Mariano and Cecil Taylor. In 1994, with Guido Mazzon he formed the "Trumpet Buzz duo" and, with Carlo Actis Dato and Lauro Rossi, the "Brasserie Trio".
From 1995 to 2004 he was part of the singer-songwriter Paolo Conte's orchestra.
In 1996 he created the "Phoebus Ensemble", a small orchestra made up of nine elements, with which he acts in a musical field that ranges between Renaissance music and avant-garde jazz.
Between 1997 and 1999 he was artistic director of the "Hasta Big Band"; he currently holds the same position with the “CVM Jazz Orchestra”. In 2001 he formed his own quartet, the Alberto Mandarini Quartet making use of the collaboration of Umberto Petrin, Giovanni Maier and U. T. Gandhi. Also in 2001 he held trumpet and ensemble music courses at the "3rd Seminario de Jazz y Flamenco" in Seville and at the "high level jazz courses" at Villa Gomes in Lecco. In 2002 he was invited to join the "Rara Jazz Quartet" with Andrea Dulbecco, Roberto Bonati and Roberto Dani. He has recorded around 50 albums (LPs and CDs).
He is currently a trumpet teacher at the "G. Verdi" Municipal Institute of Music in Asti.
